The Future of Democracy and Economic Growth

On Friday 19 June, York Festival of Ideas in association with the Joseph Rowntree Foundation, bring together a group of world-class economists, business leaders, policymakers and commentators to explore new economic models, the effectiveness of austerity policies, innovation and inequality, and the future of cities.

Following his talk at the University on 10 June, economist Amartya Sen spoke to the Yorkshire Post, attacking austerity and the 'democratic deficit' in Europe.

How the Tories took the Britain to the Brink

Join award-winning Guardian columnist Polly Toynbee and David Walker,former director of public reporting at the Audit Commission, as they argue that the Cameron coalition used the financial crisis as a pretext for realising a longstanding political ambition to dismantle the postwar welfare and social policy settlement, going further than Margaret Thatcher dared. Blending statistics and reportage, they ask whether these damaging changes are now irreversible.
