Around the world people who struggle for human rights have been threatened and attacked as they question those in power, demand accountability, and challenge social and cultural norms. Join filmmakers as they explore the reflections and emotions of human rights defenders at risk in Colombia, Mexico, Egypt, Kenya and Indonesia through three short films and a discussion.
The short films were produced as part of the research project ‘Navigating Risk, Managing Security, and Receiving Support’ conducted by the University of York’s Centre for Applied Human Rights.
The discussion involves Alice Nah from the Centre for Applied Human Rights, and filmmakers Alejandra Jimenez, Simona Manni and Emilie Flower. You can watch the films either before or after the discussion.
Alejandra Jimenez is an award-winning Colombian filmmaker whose work has dealt with denouncing the immense grief left by violent conflicts and with making visible those who, by cause of a disability, have been forgotten in society.
Simona Manni is a filmmaker and social entrepreneur who is passionate about working with communities to produce creative work through video and film.
Emilie Flower is a filmmaker and multi media artist, with a particular focus on video portraiture and storytelling.
Alice Nah is a lecturer at the University of York’s Centre for Applied Human Rights who conducts research on the security and protection of human rights defenders at risk.
