Our interactive session, presented in partnership with the Joseph Rowntree Foundation, will focus on the subject of wealth and why it matters.
As well as addressing the challenges of wealth inequality faced today, it will also provide an opportunity to consider a radical reimagination of ‘wealth’. How can we design more equitable and democratic forms of wealth generation and distribution to support a more just future, free from poverty?
Our expert panel of speakers includes Laurie Macfarlane, Co-director of Future Economy Scotland, a non-partisan think tank that aims to create a new economy that is democratic, sustainable and just; Robert Palmer, Executive Director of Tax Justice UK, an organisation which campaigns for a fairer and more effective tax system in the UK; Beth Stratford, a freelance economist and Honorary Research Fellow at the Institute for Innovation and Public Purpose, UCL, who was a founder member of the London Renters Union; and Kehinde Andrews, an academic and author specialising in Black Studies, who established the first Black Studies programme in Europe.

About the speakers
Kehinde Andrews is a British academic and author specialising in Black Studies. He is Professor of Black Studies in the School of Social Sciences at Birmingham City University and led the establishment of the first Black Studies programme in Europe. He is chair of the Harambee Organisation of Black Unity, and co-chair of the UK Black Studies Association. His books include The New Age of Empire: How Racism Still Rules the world (2021) Back to Black: Retelling Black Radicalism for the 21st Century (2018) and Resisting Racism: Race, Inequality and the Black Supplementary School Movement (2013). His recent book, The Psychosis of Whiteness: Surviving the Insanity of a Racist World, is described as ‘a rational takedown of the myths that uphold white supremacy, and systems and people that promote it across our society’.
Laurie Macfarlane is a Co-Director at Future Economy Scotland and a Visiting Fellow at the UCL Institute for Innovation and Public Purpose (IIPP). Prior to co-founding Future Economy Scotland, Laurie was Senior Economist at the New Economics Foundation, Economics Editor at openDemocracy and a trustee at the Finance Innovation Lab. He is also the co-author of the critically acclaimed book Rethinking the Economics of Land and Housing.
Robert Palmer is Executive Director of Tax Justice, which campaigns for a fairer and more effective UK tax system. He has helped to put wealth taxation on the political and media agenda. Robert led an award winning Global Witness team, which exposed how corrupt money flowed through the financial system.
Dr Beth Stratford is a freelance economist and Honorary Research Fellow at the Institute for Innovation and Public Purpose, UCL. She lectures on the political economy of housing and ecological macroeconomics. Beth was a founder member of the London Renters Union and lead author of Land For The Many, a report for the UK’s Labour Party. She is an advisor to The Social Guarantee and Positive Money. Previously in Labour’s Sustainable Economics Working Group and a fellow at the New Economics Foundation.
