Celebrating Joseph Rowntree’s Legacy
Look out for a colourful new mural in North Street Gardens commemorating York businessman, social reformer and philanthropist Joseph Rowntree’s significant contributions to our city.
Commissioned by York BID and partners to mark the centenary of his death, the mural is part of a project to revitalise the gardens and bring a renewed energy to the space through art and creativity.
North Street Gardens was gifted to York by Joseph Rowntree to improve the lives of factory workers. A hidden gem, it offers a tranquil green space in the city centre.
The new North Street Gardens mural is part of the growing York Mural Trail which is creating new destination points in the city and telling stories that reflect York’s unique history and identity through art.
The project is supported by York BID, York Cares, the City of York Council’s Eco Team, Nestle, Joseph Rowntree Foundation, and The Rowntree Society.
