About Time, York!
Event details
Welcome to a celebration of all things time related. York was one of the first places outside London to know the time accurately thanks to the observatory built in the Museum Gardens adjacent to St Olave's Church.
During the day, hear a series of short, illustrated talks with questions and discussion on topics ranging from the ‘philosophy of time’ via sundials, historic clocks and time balls to the ‘theology of time’ - not forgetting coffee time and teatime. How have modern developments in physics and astronomy changed our perception of time? What is the effect of ‘doing time’ on those whom we incarcerate?
The daytime programme will also include child-friendly events.
In the evening, enjoy poetry and music at About Time Too, presented by the well-known York collective, Navigators Art & Performance, focusing on W H Auden, born in St Olave’s parish, for whom time was a recurring theme.
No booking required but please register your interest in attending to help with planning the day.
