Event details

Join retired US Marine Steve Van Riper as he discusses the cultures of the US military services - Army, Navy, Air Force and Marines - through some interesting analogies about dog breeds, religious denominations and Hogwarts’ houses.

He’ll explain where these cultures came from, why they matter and how they impact geopolitics. Find out about culture clashes, how to work through them and why salad is better than soup.

About the speaker

Stephen ‘Steve’ Van Riper is a retired US Marine, planner, leader and educator, who is currently a postgraduate researcher at the University of York, UK.  He served for 27 years in the US Marine Corps as an infantry officer and Marine Air-Ground Task Force planner.  Steve commanded platoon through battalion level, taught at all levels including senior officer education, and planned at the Regimental, Marine Expeditionary Force (MEF) and Combatant Command (CCMD) levels.  In 2022, Steve left US European Command (EUCOM) to pursue a PhD in the School of Business and Society at the University of York, UK. His research aims to determine the ratio of specialists to generalists necessary for optimal effectiveness at headquarter levels.  He hopes this will help the Department of Defense blend the services together more effectively in Combatant Command and other Joint HQs. His research passions are Individual and Organisational Decision Making, Education and Organisational Design.
