Event details

A prominent churchman for over 50 years, Eric Milner-White is best known for inaugurating the first Festival of Nine Lessons and Carols from King's College, Cambridge on Christmas Eve 1918. This, for many, became the beginning of Christmas across the English -speaking world.

But very little is known about his life as a whole. There is no biographical study, partly because he destroyed all personal material relating to his life and was notoriously secretive.

Historian Allen Warren, author of More than Nine Lessons and Carols, explores the man behind the mask and asks whether Milner-White’s distinctive contribution to English life still has anything to say in the 21st century.

Join Allen and discover more about the life, career and personality of York’s most remarkable 20th-century Dean.
