Event details

Join us for an afternoon of energetic, creative, crafty, puzzling, scientific and historical fun with the University of York’s Humanities Research Centre at this year’s Festival Fringe Family Fun Afternoon.

Activities are particularly suitable for five to 11-year-olds, but other family members are welcome too.

Come along and enjoy:

African Sounds in Music Technology

Have you ever wanted to be a real-life musician? In this engaging sound and movement activity, children and families will explore their creativity through learning how to perform simple music compositions using professional, modern production tools!

It Takes Two to Argue

Step inside our Argument Clinic... An interactive puppet show, teaching children how arguments unfold and how to break them down using de-escalation strategies to resolve conflicts.

Point of View: Can you write from your own and someone else's?

Can you write from your own and someone else's? Does reading in first person make us feel more emotional? Does reading in third person make us think differently about a situation? Explore creative writing and reflect on the thoughts and feelings that rise to the surface when using different points of view.

Who Made Your Clothes?

Fast fashion is a hot topic at the moment but, how much does it actually cost to make a piece of clothing? In this thought-provoking activity, you will develop an understanding of the journey your clothing takes before landing on our shelves.

Sound Scavenger: Listen, identify and express

Can you tell the difference between music and just plain noise?! In this activity, you will listen to short, random audio clips and match what you hear to a description.

Hybrid Beasts: Margaret Cavendish's philosophical monsters

In Margaret Cavendish's philosophy-meets-science fiction novel 'The Blazing World', the Empress is taken through the rocky waves of the North Pole and ends up in a world full of half men, half animals. In this activity, children can create their own hybrid monster with different animal body parts and decorating them. Will your monster have long arms for reaching tall branches or thick fur for staying warm in the winter?

Viking Runes

Learn how to write your name in Viking runes and display it proudly on your very own DIY Viking shield, using paints and other arts and crafts!

Colouring In Postcards of Holidays from the 1900s

While going on holiday abroad is now a common practice, this was not always the case. It was only from the late 1950s that Brits started hopping on planes to other countries! Choose your holiday destination and create a postcard in this arty activity.

No ticket needed – just come along.
