Event details

Take a journey through the stars, planets and galaxies as Mike Shaw, Head of Astronomy at Bootham School, uses engaging storytelling to introduce you to the scale of the Universe and our significance in it.

Using simple maths and everyday examples, he’ll build up a sense of distance from our back gardens to the most distant galaxies. Join Mike as he makes complex astronomical concepts accessible to everyone, encouraging younger children to engage with some big concepts and leave wanting to find out more.

Why not come along and enjoy plenty of audience interaction and a Q&A afterwards.

This event is suitable for anyone aged eight to 11 years old.

About the speaker

Mike Shaw FRSA is the Director of Bootham School observatory and teaches Biology and Astronomy.  Astronomy GCSE is offered by Mike to local state schools as part of the ISSP programme.  Mike is passionate about astronomy and committed to sharing this with as wide an audience as possible.  He has been elected a Fellow of the Royal Astronomical Society and was one of four finalists in the i25 Awards 2020.  The competition recognises the independent education sector’s leading influencers and innovators, who have made an impact in some way.  Mike was chosen for his dedication and enthusiasm, and his work in promoting astronomy to students across York, including Bootham, the York Independent State School Partnership (ISSP) and York Festival of Ideas. As part of York Festival of Ideas 2019, he organised and designed a ‘Mission to the Moon’ event, which saw 70 young people participate in mini workshops at Bootham throughout a day of astronomy.
