Event details

Daniel Cook, Master of Choristers and Organist of Durham Cathedral, returns for a second appearance at York Festival of Ideas following his popular performance last year.

Daniel will demonstrate the power and versatility of the magnificent 1959 Walker organ which is in continuous use supporting the weekly worship at St Helen’s Church, as well as being available for recitals during the summer season.

Come along and enjoy six pieces ranging from JS Bach to Mendelssohn, Hubert Parry and Francis Jackson’s Chorale Prelude on East Acklam. This last is a welcome choice as Jackson was Director of Music at York Minster for 36 years, and also the architect and designer of the St Helen organ on which his composition will be played.

This event is free, but a retiring collection will be taken.

About the performer

Daniel Cook has been Master of the Choristers and Organist of Durham Cathedral since September 2017. In addition, he maintains a busy schedule of recitals, concerts and recordings, as well as being in demand as a conductor, teacher and organ advisor. Previously Daniel spent four years as Sub-Organist of Westminster Abbey where he was the principal organist to the Abbey Choir and Assistant Director of Music to James O'Donnell. As a recitalist, he has played across the UK, Europe, the US and Australia. He has made several solo organ recordings for Priory Records and is one of their most recorded organists. In 2013, Daniel was elected an Associate of the Royal Academy of Music (ARAM), an award offered to past students of the Academy who have distinguished themselves in the music profession and made a significant contribution to it in their particular field. He was made an Associate of the Royal School of Church Music in 2022.
