About the speakers
Chris Gale is Professor of Cardiovascular Medicine at the University of Leeds and Honorary Consultant Cardiologist at Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust. He is an internationally recognised expert in cardiovascular outcomes research, focusing on atrial fibrillation, heart failure, and post-myocardial infarction survivorship. As Co-Director of the Leeds Institute for Data Analytics, Chris leads pioneering studies using large-scale health data, AI, and randomised clinical trials to improve heart disease detection and treatment. With over 375 publications in leading medical journals, his work informs national and international healthcare policy. He is a Clinical Lead (elect) for the UK national heart attack register (MINAP), member of the NICE Indicator Advisory Committee, and was commissioned by the UK Public Inquiry into Covid-19 to serve as the Independent Expert for Cardiovascular Disease. Chris’s research aims to enhance patient outcomes through innovative use of real-world data and precision medicine.
Professor Richard Gale is an internationally recognised expert in Medical Disease of the Retina, practicing in York and North Lincolnshire. He is a Professor of Ophthalmology with the Hull York Medical School and the University of York, and an Honorary Consultant Medical Ophthalmologist with the York Teaching Hospital NHS Foundation Trust. His research interests are in the fields of medical disorders of the retina, in particular Age-related Macular Degeneration. In 2017, he was awarded ‘Researcher of the Year’ by the National Institute for Health Research/Royal College of Ophthalmologists. He is a Joint Ophthalmology Specialty Lead for Yorkshire and Humberside Local Research Network and holds the Deputy Chair for the National Ophthalmology Specialty Group (Northern). He is a former President of the Medical Ophthalmology Society and recently established the Yorkshire Macular Degeneration Fund, with Dame Judy Dench as Patron.
