About the speakers

Professor Richard Gale is an internationally recognised expert in Medical Disease of the Retina, practicing in York and North Lincolnshire. He is a Professor of Ophthalmology with the Hull York Medical School and the University of York, and an Honorary Consultant Medical Ophthalmologist with the York Teaching Hospital NHS Foundation Trust. His research interests are in the fields of medical disorders of the retina, in particular Age-related Macular Degeneration. In 2017, he was awarded ‘Researcher of the Year’ by the National Institute for Health Research/Royal College of Ophthalmologists. He is a Joint Ophthalmology Specialty Lead for Yorkshire and Humberside Local Research Network and holds the Deputy Chair for the National Ophthalmology Specialty Group (Northern). He is a former President of the Medical Ophthalmology Society and recently established the Yorkshire Macular Degeneration Fund, with Dame Judy Dench as Patron. 

Dr Ramesh Nadarajah is a NIHR Academic Clinical Lecturer in Cardiology and a Health Data Reserach UK Fellow at the Insitutte of Data Analytics and Institute of Cardiovascular and Metabolic Medicine at the University of Leeds and Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust. His research incorporates the use of large routinely-collected datasets to answer clinical questions and develop and validate prediction models, particularly in the area of atrial fibrillation, heart failure, and atrial fibrillation after stroke, and cardio-renal-metabolic disease. He is also now translating these prediction algorithms into clinical trials. Ramesh's clinical interests are in prevention, early detection and screening for cardio-renal-metabolic disease. Ramesh was awarded the Young Investigator Award at the British Society of Heart Failure Annual Meeting in 2024. He is an Associate Editor of the European Heart Journal Quality of Care and Clinical Outcomes.
