Meeting point: Walk past the remains of St Mary’s Abbey in Museum Gardens to find The Mosaic Map.

Ammonites in the pebbles, corals in the cobbles, and oysters in the high street. Can you really find fossils on the historic streets of York? With the power of pavement palaeontology, and with palaeontologist Fossiliam (aka Liam Herringshaw) as your guide, yes, you can.

Discover why York is the birthplace of fossil-science; work out what connects Roman columns, polo mints, and the myths of St Cuthbert; and hear the tales of York's trailblazing female fossil-hunters.

WARNING: You won't be able to look at pavements and building stones the same way again!

Please note: The route has a small number of steps and a few cobbled surfaces.

Suitable for all: Whether you are an adult attending alone or with friends, or a family group with children, this event is for you.

About the speaker

Fossiliam is Dr Liam Herringshaw, palaeontologist, writer, and Earth science tutor in the Centre for Lifelong Learning. Liam has been researching fossils for 25 years, and leading fossil hunts for more than a decade. He also co-directs the Yorkshire Fossil Festival. Liam particularly enjoys leading urban fossil hunts, as these tend to surprise people with the number of ancient creatures we can find hiding in the streets and buildings of British cities.
