Event details

Welcome to the world of robotics. From autonomous aerial vehicles to robotic arms, find out about research being carried out into how these systems can be managed safely at the Institute for Safe Autonomy at the University of York.

Enjoy talks, an aerial drone demonstration and an exhibition. Join us and discover how new technologies - which can learn and solve problems independently - are transforming the way we live, travel and work.

Activities include:

Exploring the World of Robotics Exhibition

Join us for a drop-in robotics exhibition in the Atrium. Look out for:

  • The Augmented Reality Sandbox, which combines a normal sandpit with incredible Augmented Reality technology to create an out-of-this world experience.
  • The Wheel, a giant wheel mobile sculpture, presented by the arts charity IOU, working in collaboration with the Institute for Safe Autonomy. The remote controlled sculpture will be mounted with sensors enabling the Institute to record and research responses to automated vehicles in public spaces.

No booking required. Activities are suitable for all ages.

Safety of Autonomous Aerial Vehicle Missions

Experience a taste of the future as you watch an aerial drone demonstration and learn about the ways autonomous aerial vehicles (UAVs) could change our lives.

Take part in this session to see how our specialist facilities are helping the safe deployment and use of these technologies in society.

Booking is required. Sessions start at 1pm, 1.30pm, 2pm and 2.30pm and last approximately half an hour. Suitable for all ages.

Robotic Assistance

Find out how a robotic arm could improve the lives of the elderly and disabled by assisting with dressing. Watch a demo of the robotic arm playing a simple children’s game, and have a go at operating it yourself.

Booking is required. Sessions start at 1pm, 1.30pm, 2pm and 2.30pm and last approximately half an hour. Suitable for all ages.

The Wheel: A moving mechanical sculpture for the street

Join arts charity IOU, the creators of The Wheel, to find out more about the mobile stage production featured in our Exploring the World of Robotics exhibition. A gleaming self-propelled hub-less wheel, the artwork includes a miniature character walking inside on a seemingly epic journey. Learn more about this and other innovative IOU projects.

Booking is required. Sessions start at 1pm and 2pm and last approximately half an hour. Suitable for all ages.
