Event details

Due to circumstances beyond our control this event is not going ahead.  Apologies for any disappointment caused. (Of course you don't need to attend this event to celebrate pubs, but if you had been planning to then we suggest a trip to your local instead!)

Pubs frequently sit at the heart of their local community, providing much more than just a hospitality setting and a place to have a drink.  But with two pubs closing a day, what is the future of the sector?  Why should we celebrate and support them?

Join Victoria Wells of the University of York and Greg Mulholland and Paul Crossman of the Campaign for Pubs and raise a toast to the economic, social, historical and cultural capital York pubs bring to the area, and how powerful they can be.  We’ll be sharing stories and memories of when pubs have been powerful, changed lives, and supported communities.

You are welcome to stay after the talk to continue the conversation.

About the speaker

Victoria Wells is Professor of Sustainable Management with the University of York’s School for Business and Society. She works as ‘Professor of Pubs’ (she tweets as @ProfessorPubUK) and examines consumer behaviour related to pubs. Her work has been featured in The Yorkshire Post, the Daily Star and The Morning Advertiser

Greg Mulholland is a national award-winning pub campaigner, a former Leeds MP and City Councillor and a long-time pub enthusiast and is the Campaign Director for the Campaign for Pubs.  Greg served as MP for Leeds North West for 12 years (2005 to 2017) and as a campaigning pro-pub MP, Greg set up the Parliamentary Save the Pub Group in 2009 and won no less than five CAMRA national parliamentary campaigner of the year awards. In 2011 Greg was voted as a Top 40 CAMRA campaigner of all time by CAMRA members. Greg founded the British Pub Confederation in 2015, the confederation of organisations representing pubs and publicans, to give a strong ongoing voice to pubs and Greg has chaired it ever since. Greg then joined forces with other campaigners to form the Campaign for Pubs in 2020.

Paul Crossman is a licensee and pub campaigner based in York. He runs three award-winning community-orientated cask ale pubs just outside the city centre. They are The Swan, The Slip Inn and Volunteer Arms. Paul is also a founder director of The York Gin Company, an independent multi-award-winning craft distillery.
