London has enjoyed nearly 2,000 years as England’s capital and has maintained its position up to the present day as a major world city.

This talks reveals the history of the City through its architecture: from Roman times when it became a thriving commercial and military base to the Great Fire which destroyed 13,500 buildings, through to the Blitz, and then today’s City with its skyline punctuated with distinctive high-rises.

Sir Nicholas Kenyon is Managing Director of the Barbican Centre in the City of London and, in that role, a Chief Officer of the City of London. He was previously Controller of BBC Radio 3 and Director of the BBC.
