Walking the ancient landscapes of Britain

Walking alone in all seasons and over some of the most dramatic and evocative countryside in the British Isles, Philip Hughes would stop along his route to sketch the ancient landscapes around him.

Spacious and clean, with arresting blocks of colour, these artworks are a very contemporary interpretation of some of the most ancient and awe-inspiring landmarks to be found in the British Isles.

Philip Hughes's work is based mainly on landscape with a special interest in remote areas, archaeology, topography and maps.

He has had over forty one-man exhibitions, including many with public galleries in the UK, France, Mexico and Australia. He was chairman of the Trustees of the National Gallery, London from 1996 - 2000, and was appointed CBE in 1982.
