Ever wanted to know what it’s like to work in the film industry? To (re)tell stories on screen? To win at the Oscars?

We are excited to partner with York Theatre Royal and, together, welcome multi-award-winning British film editor, Joe Walker, who recently received an Academy Award® for his work on Dune: Part One (2021), an adaptation of Frank Herbert’s epic 1965 science fiction novel.

Explore Joe’s fascinating career path to his current role, find out what it was like to work on Dune, and discover the exciting world of film editing.

About the speaker

Joe Walker, ACE is a celebrated British film editor based in Los Angeles. He recently received an Academy Award® for his work on Dune: Part One (2021), having been nominated for the prestigious award in 2014 and 2017. He has also been nominated four times by the ACE Eddie Awards, which he won for Arrival (2016). In addition to Dune and Arrival, this Academy Award® winner and three-time BAFTA Award nominee is also known for his exemplary work on films such as Sicario (2015), 12 Years a Slave (2013) and Blade Runner 2049 (2017). Joe has forged notable partnerships with directors Steve McQueen and Denis Villeneuve, for whom he edited Dune: Part One (2021). He was initially trained as a classical composer, graduating from the University of York Music Department in 1984. He was awarded an honorary doctorate by the University in 2019.
