Event details

Beer and poetry often went together in Anglo-Saxon England and the hall was celebrated as the place of community and creativity. Join us in the beorsele or beer-hall of The Black Swan Inn for an evening of beer and Anglo-Saxon poetry and prose.

A retinue of reciters from the University of York perform a selection of readings, both in translation and in the original, on the theme of place and space.

About the speaker

Hannah Lewis is studying for an MA in Medieval Studies. She has a particular interest in the Vikings, Medieval Wales and Mythology.

Tara Peterson is studying for an MA in Medieval Studies. Her main focus is on early medieval and high medieval literature in the North Atlantic, in particular Old English and Old Norse poetry. Tara enjoys reading apocalypse fiction and gardening in her spare time.

Anna Pirie is studying for an MA in Medieval Literatures and Languages, with a particular focus on the apparatus of the mouth in Old English poetry. 

Phyllis Wicks is studying part-time for an MA in Medieval Studies with a research focus on Latin teaching in early medieval England and what it might contribute to teaching antique and classical languages today.

Lydia Williams is a former Latin and Classics teacher seduced into a Medieval studies masters by Anglo-Saxon poetry and Tolkien. Her research interests lie in comparative literature, exilic poetry, and how halls and social ritual were vital in creating and maintaining pre-Norman communities.
