Imagining Thrutopias: How we made it through
Event details
Find out about a York community creative writing project that used ‘thrutopia’ fiction as an alternative to dystopian/doom-laden narratives about climate change.
The online event will showcase the 'How We Made It Through' project and anthology, as well as introducing the concept of thrutopia fiction and celebrating a local grassroots initiative.
Hear from Rupert Read, creator of the concept of Thrutopia; learn about the radical intentions behind the publication and its design, print and distribution of the anthology; enjoy short readings from contributors (poetry and prose); and view some of the illustrations included in the anthology.
Join us and let's imagine, with realistic hope, how we could make it through, and what that means for action we can do in the here and now.
This event will take place live on Zoom Webinar. You will receive a link to join a couple of days before the event and a reminder an hour before. During the event, you can ask questions via a Q&A function, but audience cameras and microphones will remain muted throughout.
This event is presented by Planet South Bank, a community climate group in York, UK.
How We Made It Through
Copies of the anthology are available free for download and in print on a pay-as-you-feel basis. The anthology has a foreword by Rupert Read, creator of the concept of Thrutopia and a response by Manda Scott, a thrutopian fiction writer and renowned podcaster. Riso printing was used because of its particularly low environmental impact compared to traditional printing methods. The publication was funded by the Joseph Rowntree Foundation’s Emerging Futures programme.
About the speaker
Rupert Read brings together the climate majority – the millions of people in the UK and around the world who care about climate and nature but may not see themselves as activists. He co-founded The Climate Majority Project in 2022 to help people to realise their collective power and take meaningful action. Before this, he was a spokesperson and strategist for Extinction Rebellion, a parliamentary candidate and councillor for the Green Party, and chaired the ecological think tank Green House – experiences that shaped his work in convening the climate majority. For most of his life, he has been committed to this cause. He left his role as Associate Professor of Philosophy at the University of East Anglia after 26 years to focus fully on building this movement. He regularly makes the case for climate action in the Guardian, the Independent and Prospect, and has appeared on BBC’s Today Programme, Question Time, Newsnight, Politics Live and on LBC. Among many books such as This Civilisation is Finished, he is the co-author of Transformative Adaptation: Another world is still just possible.
