Step into Nature with St Nicks
Event details
Join us for an educational walk and some balsam bashing.
Help protect the important habitats on Fulford Ings by pulling out the invasive plant, Himalayan balsam. Balsam can completely dominate an area, creating a monoculture which diminishes our all-important biodiversity. By removing balsam, we are minimising its spread across our watercourses and floodplains and making room for native wildflowers and plants which, in turn, support other species like bees, butterflies and water voles.
The work will mostly take place around the edge of the grassland habitat which should be dry at this time of year. We won't be going in the water at all. There will be nettles and brambles to work around so please come dressed appropriately.
Suitable for all abilities and ages 8+.
Please note:
- The meeting point is at the University Boathouse, Fulford Ings (what3words: ///crisp.live.angel).
- If arriving by car, please park on St Oswalds Road and walk down to the Ings.
- A long-sleeved top and trousers, sturdy footwear (no open-toed shoes) and a waterproof jacket/suncream depending on the weather, are recommended.
This event is presented by York Cares.
