Event details

Take a whirlwind trip through the history of mathematics with James Ratcliffe of Bootham School as he continues his mission to make maths fun and accessible for all.

Journey through the renaissance looking at how maths can plan your strolls around town and how to check when you are at the top of a hill in dense fog. Discover modern mathematics including the works of Riemann, Turing and Fry Richardson and explore where maths will go next.

This event is the second part of a tour through the history of mathematics which began at last year’s Festival.

The talk is suitable for 11+ years.

This event is presented by Bootham School.

About the speaker

James Ratcliffe is Senior Deputy Head at Bootham School. As well as a teacher of Mathematics and Computer Science, he is an unapologetic believer that maths should be joyful, playful and a little bit surprising. Known for bringing energy and curiosity to the subject, James has delivered engaging workshops and talks on recreational and enrichment mathematics for organisations including the York Independent State School Partnership (ISSP), York Festival of Ideas and Oundle Maths Outreach - where puzzles, paradoxes and ‘wait… how does that work?’ moments are very much encouraged. He also leads the York Mathematical Excellence Club, a flagship York ISSP project that brings together 60 talented Year 8 and 9 mathematicians. The club meets regularly to explore deep and fascinating mathematical ideas, with students mentored by University of York undergraduates, helping them think, talk and argue like real mathematicians.
