Event details

“The most important book in the world” – Max Porter

Voices of Resistance is a collection of diaries from four Gazan women – Batool Abu Akleen, Sondos Sabra, Nahil Mohana and Ala'a Obaid – offering first-hand accounts of Israeli airstrikes, forced displacement and what the UN World Health Organisation described as ‘man-made’ famine. The book features a foreword by Gillian Slovo and an introduction by Carol Churchill, with all proceeds from its sale going to the writers.

During this event hosted by Comma Press, you'll hear readings from this powerful collection by Sondos, followed by a Q+A panel discussion with James Harker, co-editor of Voices of Resistance.

About the speakers

Sondos Sabra is a writer and translator from Gaza City and a co-author of Voices of Resistance: Diaries of Genocide (Comma Press, 2025). She holds a bachelor's degree in English Literature from the Islamic University of Gaza. After surviving two years of genocide, she has recently arrived in the UK, where she is studying for an MA in Creative Writing. Sondos is a regular contributor to New Statesman (she wrote the cover story for their October 1, 2025 edition). Her writing has also appeared in the Guardian, Equator, ArabLit Quarterly, Berria, Ara, Truthdig and Mondoweiss. Voices of Resistance: Diaries of Genocide was first published by Comma Press in July 2025 and has since been published internationally by Bilioasis (North America), Acts Sud (France), and WSOY (Finland). It will soon be published by Blackie Books (Catalan) and Blackie Edizioni (Italy). It was a New Statesman and New Arab ‘Book of the Year, 2025’.

James Harker is a playwright and the co-editor of Voices of Resistance. He is the producer of Voices of Resilience, a touring stage production of Comma Press' diaries from Gaza, which was performed at The Barbican, Edinburgh International Book Festival, Leeds Playhouse and more.
