Processes in the mind and brain underpinning mental health and wellbeing are particularly malleable during primary school years. Fostering these processes effectively early on can improve children’s lifelong trajectories of mental health and wellbeing. However, so far we have not fully harnessed the potential for systematic cultivation of these processes in primary schools.

Dusana Dorjee of University of York will present her new comprehensive neuroscience-based framework for teaching children in primary schools the knowledge and skills that can support their mental health and wellbeing long-term. The framework gradually builds up children’s capacities of emotional awareness, managing distractions, reactivity and worry, and helps them build connections, purpose in life and a healthy sense of self.

About the speaker

Dr Dusana Dorjee is a Senior Lecturer in Psychology in Education at the University of York, UK, where she heads the Well Minds Lab. As a psychologist and neuroscientist, she investigates processes in the mind and brain underpinning mental health and wellbeing and translates new understanding of these processes into educational practice and policy. Her latest book, Making Sense of Mental Health and Wellbeing in Primary Schools: A Practical, Neuroscience-Based Guide (Routledge), specifies key capacities underpinning mental health and wellbeing and presents a trauma-informed 7-Step approach to fostering these capacities systematically and gradually across primary school years.
