Event details

In our increasingly digital world, what even is real life anymore? We used to talk of digital distractions, but does the physical now distract us from the digital? The internet is huge, but are our horizons?

Siobhan Dunlop and Steph Jesper of the University of York and Susan Halfpenny of the University of Strathclyde explore the ever-changing (even disappearing) distinction between digital and physical worlds. Join us to consider the impact of this more digital world on our wellbeing and the growing inequalities it creates.

This event will take place live on Zoom Webinar. You will receive a link to join a couple of days before the event and a reminder an hour before. During the event, you can ask questions via a Q&A function, but audience cameras and microphones will remain muted throughout.

About the speakers

Siobhan Dunlop works in the Academic and Digital Skills team within Library, Learning, Archives and Wellbeing at the University of York, UK, developing and delivering digital skills training for students and staff on areas like coding, generative AI and digital creativity. They also spend their time fixing 3D printers and reading about technology ethics and the past and future of the internet.

Susan Halfpenny is the University Librarian at the University of Strathclyde, UK, where she leads the strategic development of library services to support learning, teaching and research. While working in academic libraries she has led a range of initiatives to enhance digital literacies, open research services and digital scholarship. Her professional interests are wellbeing, organisational culture, digital creativity and information literacy.

Steph Jesper has spent the last umpteen years living in spreadsheets. She’s a qualified Librarian who moonlights in IT, developing and delivering digital skills training for students and staff at the University of York, UK. Prior to that, she’s had fun at a range of educational establishments, and less fun trying to sell records online. Her role model is Maggie Philbin, her favourite Doctor Who serial is ‘The Stones of Blood’, her Eurovision Song Contest of choice is 1977 and her preferred Treasure Hunt episode is Birmingham (series 2) - all things she’s been able to re-watch thanks to the Internet.
