In 2015 Arts Council England funded new research into York Archaeological Trust (YAT) excavations of the Swinegate area of York in the 1980s and 90s. A number of exceptional artefacts were found, including a collection of wooden coffins and covers with associated human remains of late 9th to early 11th century date, belonging to the cemetery of the lost church of St Benet’s.
Hear from YAT’s Field Officer Jane McComish and Conservator Steve Allen about the background to this fascinating dig and the new discoveries that continue to be made.
