Vaughan Williams: A Sea Symphony York Musical Society and Philharmonischer Chor Münster
Event details
Join us for what promises to be a feast of music by British composer Vaughan Williams, performed by York Musical Society and its German partner choir, Philharmonischer Chor Münster.
The main work, panoramic in scale, will be ‘A Sea Symphony’. Depicting different aspects of the sea, it is based on poems by Walt Whitman, including ‘The Waves’ and ‘On the Beach at Night Alone’. Another Whitman setting, ‘Toward the Unknown Region’ - described by the composer as ‘a song for chorus and orchestra’ - will take you on a journey from darkness to light. Completing the programme is the beautiful orchestral work ‘Serenade in A minor’.
Do not miss this fantastic concert to celebrate Vaughan Williams’s 150th anniversary year as well as a 30-year partnership between the two choirs, which began with a performance in Münster cathedral in 1993.
Booking is recommended, but tickets are also available at the door.

York Musical Society
York Musical Society (YMS) is a large choral society based in York, which performs three concerts a year, usually in York Minster. They also give smaller, more informal concerts at Christmas and hold an annual choral workshop day, open to all singers. Their concerts as well as rehearsals and lectures have been included in previous Festivals. YMS is twinned with a similar-sized choir in Germany, the Philharmonischer Chor Münster, and the two choirs regularly travel to perform together.
