Fed up with hearing about the same historical characters from York’s past? Need more diversity? Then the York Trailblazers Team wants to hear from you!
Supported by the National Lottery Heritage Fund and managed by York Civic Trust and Make it York, York Trailblazers aims to unearth people in York who have made a difference, but have been forgotten, ignored or overlooked.
Working together with local community and heritage groups, the York Trailblazers team not only aims to discover a more diverse set of people from York’s past, but also to co-create a sustainable, city-wide sculpture trail in 2024, alongside other engagement opportunities.
Join our Trailblazers workshop for an exciting opportunity to hear and share stories about forgotten local heroes, to discuss how they can be celebrated, and to help shape York’s new sculpture trail!
Please note that this venue is not wheelchair accessible.

York Civic Trust
York Civic Trust has been in operation since 1946, promoting heritage in order to shape York for the future. The Civic Trust is responsible for plaques around the city as well as for the running of Fairfax House. It undertakes the conservation of heritage assets and, in partnership with the University of York’s Department of Archaeology, runs the Heritage Planning Studio, providing work experience for postgraduates wishing to become the next generation of Conservation Officers.

About the speakers
Andrew Morrison is the CEO of York Civic Trust. Andrew has worked in the heritage and culture sector across the North of England as a senior curator for national organisations such as the National Trust and English Heritage, and more locally focussed, at places like the Leeds Library.
Bethan Gibb-Reid is Creative and Cultural Development Manager at Make It York. Bethan has a background in community theatre, production and administration and now works closely with the Head of Culture and Well-Being, managing and delivering York’s Culture Strategy and Culture Forum.
Athenoula Sophocleous is Project Curator. Athenoula’s role is to enable communities to unearth forgotten stories about people from York and to co-create a programme to celebrate these people across the city. Athenoula’s background is in public art, community productions and theatre.
