The Future of Food

On Monday 15 June, In association with Quorn Foods and the launch of World Meat Free Day, York Festival of Ideas delivers a series of workshops, demonstrations and panel discussions to address issues related to food security, food sustainability, climate change, food and health and feeding a growing planetary population.

The Festival of Ideas is supporting World Meat Free Day on Monday 15 June. Make a difference to our planet and give up meat just for one day. To sign up and support the campaign go to World Meat Free Day website.

Please note that Quorn: Food out of the kitchen scheduled to take place on Monday 15 June has been cancelled.

The Future of Food: The ticking time bomb

Reflections on Quorn and an introduction to Meat Free Monday by Kevin Brennan, Quorn.

Keynote address by Tara Garnett, Food Climate Research Network.

Followed by a panel discussion with:                      

  • Christopher Ritson from the Food Ethics Council
  • Joyce D'Silva, Ambassador of Compassion in World Farming
  • Tara Garnett, Food and Climate Research Network
  • Professor Sue Hartley, University of York

You Are What You Eat

Keynote address by Tim Spector, author of The Diet Myth

Followed by a panel discussion with:

  • Tim Spector, King’s College London
  • Paul Gateley, Leeds Beckett University
  • Nick Hex, Associate Director, York Health Economics Consortium

Chair: Sue Hartley, University of York

The session will conclude with three minute presentations by three research finalists from the Quorn researcher knowledge exchange competition.

Let’s Talk About Meat

Keynote address by Sue Dibb, Eating Better: for a fair, green, healthy future

Followed by panel discussion with:

  • Sue Dibb, Eating Better Alliance
  • Geoff Tansey, Chair of the Fabian Commission on Food Poverty and member of the Guild of Food Writers
  • Alex Renton, campaigning journalist and food writer
  • John Marren, CEO Community Shop and Company Shop, Doncaster
