To gain royal backing for a drainage project designed to ensure better health for the local peasants, a poor French lord must first learn to play the games of wit at court in Versailles…

Join us for a special screening of the 1996 French comedy Ridicule, directed by Patrice Leconte. Set in the 18th century court of Louis XVI, the story examines the social injustices of late 18th century France, showing the corruption and callousness of the aristocrats.

Ridicule is probably Leconte’s best-known film outside France and was the winner of the César Award for Best Film, Best Director, Best Costume Design and Best Production Design. It also won the 1997 BAFTA Award for best Film not in the English Language.

The film is presented in collaboration with Ciné Lumière, part of the Institut français du Royaume-Uni in London.
